Although the above terms are the same by definition according to Wikipedia
The term gilding covers a number of decorative techniques for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold. A gilded object is described as “gilt”.
Here at The Sign Depot it meant we would be Gilding a Sign for Gilt Restaurant with Gold Leaf.
Getting Ready To Glisten
The dimensional sign for Gilt Restaurant began with CNC cutting the structure for the custom sign
and then the gilded finish was applied to the sign give it the shine that can only be acheived by 23 karat gold leaf.
Not only does gold leaf attract the attention of passers-by, it is an finish that withstand the elements which makes it a great choice for an outdoor sign.
Additionally the custom sign for Gilt Restaurant was equiped with LEDs to ensure that the sign would glisten both day an night.
Once assembled the exterior sign was prepped for installation
After the sign was affixed to the building exterior, temporary signage was displayed in the window to build buzz about the restaurant for downtown core.

Del Dente To Dels Dimensional Signs
Adding Dimension To The Dels Enoteca Pizzeria
If you have visited Kitchener Waterloo Ontario there is a very good chance you have noticed the Charcoal Restaurant dimensional signs on the exterior of their building.
The Charcoal Group, known for their foreward thinking in the food industry, made the decision to rebrand their Del Dente Restaurant to Dels Enoteca Pizzeria. As described on their website the new logo was born out of the idea that our cuisine is an art form. The shape behind the word dels is a graphic representation of a hand-made pizza dough as well as a spot of sauce that might have splashed onto the chef’s coat when they took the first taste-test. Or, it is the splash of paint from an artist’s paintbrush. The customized font to represent ‘dels’ reminds us of spaghetti or linguine noodles and it exudes a fun and approachable feeling. The logo and identity will embrace that feeling that will flow into all touch points that the guest might see or touch. To bring the brand identity to the forefront during the establishment’s renovations, our expert sign-makers created dimensional signs to reflect the restaurant refresh.
Rebrand, Remove, Renew, Refresh and Repurpose During Restaurant Renovations
There were several steps involved in the Dels Enoteca Pizzeria Signage Package. Once the rebranding renovations began, time was of the essence to change over the Del Dente dimensional sign to #TheNewDels signs.
Removal of the iconic sign

Construction of new dimensional signs
Refurbishing of previous sign pieces 
Installation of the new signage package 
If you check out the video below you will see that several artistic signs were fabricated for Dels as well as some of their other signs were repurposed for the project.

Last month we installed the custom business sign for Robins Goldsmithing. During this process Waterloo Smiles was in the midst of moving in to the same building. Putting A Smile On The Face Of A Sign
The exterior sign for Waterloo Smiles was mix of sign manufacturing techniques. Acrylic push through letters were lit with white LEDs to stand out from the black finished sign face. This mix of materials created contrast for this eye-catching outdoor sign which was then installed on the front of the building to create an inviting entrance-way.

Custom 3 Dimensional Signs Can Be Big For Business – Baden Coffee
A Big Bean For Baden Coffee
Finding ways to bring attention to a new location can cause difficulty for some businesses, but Baden Coffee knew just what to do for the opening of their sit down coffee shop and retail location. They decided a 3 dimensional sign would be a great way to attract attention to their establishment and increase the findabilty of their location. Baden Coffee decided to create a landmark sculptural sign that would make their business highly visible to passers-by. Over the years we have created several signs for Baden Coffee and they wanted to heighten the visibilty of their unique brands.
The 3 dimensional sign was created to extend their branding to the exterior of the store. A replica of the animated coffee bean from their logo
was constructed from Carved High Density Urethane (HDU) through the use of our CNC Router Table and a lathe to manufacture the rounded objects.

Artistic Finishing Touches
An artistic custom finish was applied to the sign scuplture. It included a styrocoat spray applied to the surface to harden the HDU (sign foam) and serve as a base for the paint to adhere to. Painting was done in stages and made to match the character logo for Baden Coffee. Creating the custom paint finish for the Baden Coffee Bean sculpture added to the “look” of the 3 dimensional sign.
Bringing In Big Business At Baden Coffee
After the Baden Coffee Big Coffee Bean was completed it was installed above the main entrance. This 3 dimensional sign is sure to become a landmark for the Baden Coffee retail location and will attract the attention of the traffic passing by.

There’s A New Kid In Town – Beertown Arrives In Waterloo Region
Exterior Signs For An Extraordinary Restaurant Concept
As mentioned on the Beertown website….
Beertown – our newest concept – is a fusion of a retro public house and a modern beer bar, built around a ‘chef driven’ kitchen.….the newest Charcoal Group Restaurant was going to change the local eatery landscape in Waterloo Region. With their unique approach to culinary masterpieces, we knew that this sign project needed “WOW” factor.
Since Beertown Cambridge is situated on the busy Highway 24, Hespler Rd there would be a lot of vehicle traffic passing by, and there would need to be a way to catch their attention. It was important to have Beertown’s exterior business sign be noticed by passers-by.
The Beertown main logo was only part of the focus for this sign. In addition the PUBLIC HOUSE part of the sign was to be a feature as well.
We used several techniques to create the outdoor signs. The “Beertown” portion was created from channel letters finished to match the brand logo. The “PUBLIC HOUSE” was also created with channel letters, but with a few additions. That element of the sign was to resemble a marquee sign with an aged look. Most marquee signs are created with traditional light bulbs, but to keep the sign eco-friendly the light bulbs are actually powered by LED lights, which are low energy and have a much longer bulb life. The paint finish on the letters gave the sign a distressed look that would catch attention to those driving by.
You can see some of our behind the scenes photo on the Beertown Facebook Page. In addition to the main exterior sign a mural was created on the side of the building. The mural resembled a bottle cap with a weathered look. It was created with stencils, spray paint and our resident graffiti artist/sign creator David Hoover. The finished mural quickly changed a plain white wall into a work of art.
When the project was completed Beertown included The Sign Depot in their announcement of opening video. The video below catches the installation portion of their signage.
