Custom 3 Dimensional Signs Can Be Big For Business – Baden Coffee

A Big Bean For Baden Coffee

Finding ways to bring attention to a new location can cause difficulty for some businesses, but Baden Coffee knew just what to do for the opening of their sit down coffee shop and retail location.  They decided a 3 dimensional sign would be a great way to attract attention to their establishment and increase the findabilty of their location. Baden Coffee decided to create a landmark sculptural sign that would make their business highly visible to passers-by.  Over the years we have created several signs for Baden Coffee and they wanted to heighten the visibilty of their unique brands.

The 3 dimensional sign was created to extend their branding to the exterior of the store. A replica of the animated coffee bean from their logo

was constructed from Carved High Density Urethane (HDU) through the use of our CNC Router Table and a lathe to manufacture the rounded objects.

Below is photo recap of how the project evolved within our Sign Depot workshop.

Artistic Finishing Touches

An artistic custom finish was applied to the sign scuplture. It included a styrocoat spray applied to the surface to harden the HDU (sign foam) and serve as a base for the paint to adhere to. Painting was done in stages and made to match the character logo for Baden Coffee.  Creating the custom paint finish for the Baden Coffee Bean sculpture added to the “look” of the 3 dimensional sign.

Bringing In Big Business At Baden Coffee

After the Baden Coffee Big Coffee Bean was completed it was installed above the main entrance.  This 3 dimensional sign is sure to become a landmark for the Baden Coffee retail location and will attract the attention of the traffic passing by.

Custom Vintage Look Wood Signs – Truth Beauty’s Business Sign Solutions

The Beauty Of A Distressed Wood Sign

custom 3 dimensional sign - The Sign Depot

When it comes to Business Sign Solutions we have lots of options to suit a company’s branding.  Finding that perfect fit may take more than one type of material to make the establishment recognizable in busy areas.  When the The Truth Beauty Company moved from their Olivier location, they took the opportunity to create custom business signs for this new business.

Their store front sign and reception sign was fabricated from repurposed wood to give the signs a vintage look.  To add dimension to the custom signs, High Density Urethane (sign foam) letters and designs were CNC cut on our Router table.  Those HDU pieces were given custom finishes and then attached to the distressed wood and framed.  This gave the Truth Beauty sign 3 dimensional sign elements while keeping with the antique look of the wood.

Add Some Artistic Signage

In addition to the exterior entranceway sign and interior sign and additional artistic fabric wall hanging was created to further showcase the business’s logo.  A stencil was cut to match the design and applied to the fabric.  Next the design was airbrushed on the material and after the stencil was removed the result was an artistic sign in the form of custom piece of drapery for their location.

Dimensional Signs as Props and Conversation Pieces

Bringing The Outdoors In

When we talk about 3 dimensional signs it often has to do with large outdoor signs and landmark pieces.  These signs are often referred to as Roadside Attractions and are great for wayfinding signs and findability soloutions. There are other applications for 3D signs as well. They make great props for trade shows, menu displays for restaurants and they add impact to entrance ways.  Here at The Sign Depot we have found a way to combine the outdoor landmark piece with the indoor impact piece.

3 Dimensional Augmented Reality and the Sign Industry

Super Heroes, Sporty Cars and Signs

This week marks the arrival of the much anticipated summer blockbuster The Avengers.  As with all the films that Marvel creates, a large amount of licenced products will accompany the movie’s release.   Marvel has teamed up with WalMart to create a marketing campaign to continue The Avengers’ 3D experience by taking it beyond the theatre and into WalMart retail locations.  While WalMart already capitalizes on radio and tv ads, they have added an element of surprise to the mix.  It involves signs.  Signs that may look like 2D digitally printed signs to passers by, but to those “in the know” it’s the beginning of an adventure.

http://youtu.be/dXpZ7niGgIY

Through the use of Augmented Reality and a smartphone, Walmart shoppers are able to create an Avengers experience by scanning the signage for Marvel merchandise.  Although this might be the launch of Augmented Reality to masses, WalMart was not the first big brand to tap into this type of media.  Last year Volkswagon Canada used Augmented Reality to launch their new Beetle in the heart of Toronto.  They used traditional signage to create a stunt car rally to show off their enhanced model.

http://youtu.be/KRA0SZhKNyo

Augmented Reality was a term that many recognize, but few had experienced first hand.  It is a process where Geo Tags known as “layers” are embedded into a 2D sign. An Augmented Reality app reads the tags and displays the content linked to the tag on an augmented reality equipped device.  Now that smartphones are 4G (ie able to display fast streaming video), augmented reality can be experienced in the palm of your hand.  The applications are widespread and when executed properly it can attract customers by creating user experiences.  Augmented Reality is changing the 2D signage landscape into a 3 dimensional land where a smartphone or tablet can take a product and bring it life.  It will give consumers the feeling of fast forwarding into the future.  Augmented Reality will bring signage to the forefront of this cutting edge application.

What do you think is next for Augmented Reality and Signs?

3 Dimensional Sign Manufacturing In Kitchener Waterloo – WaterlooMIN Takes It All In

Where Will We Be Found Next?

Building a buzz around Waterloo Region is something that we enjoy creating, but we’re not the only ones. WaterlooMIN re-branded and is creating a lot of sparks in the local manufacturing industry.  We were excited to be included in their re-launch event and took the opportunity to make several connections with those involved in the WaterlooMIN site.

Julia Rosien of WaterlooMIN came by The Sign Depot to get a behind the scenes glimpse of the sign manufacturing industry. She took the time to create a post and video about her experience. She mentioned that our OPEN DOOR policy is very rare in the manufacturing community and appreciated by their organization.  It is great to know that Waterloo Region supports what we are doing and helping other local manufactures to excel in their industry through the use of the WaterlooMIN site.

Julia’s full post can be found on the WaterlooMIN site, as well as this video describing what we do and showing some behind the scenes of the 3 dimensional sign for The Silver Spoon located in downtown Kitchener Ontario. http://youtu.be/Tdm8sttN1hQ?hd=1

Our online pressence through the use of Social Networks was discussed at length.  That discussion evolved into how blogging and how our twitter and facebook pages are used to amplify the posts.  Julia gave us a lot of great feedback on these topics and reinforced the idea that the blog is a great tool to create a community following.

This month we’re proud to announce that The Sign Depot has been added to WaterlooMIN ‘s EXPERT BLOGGER list under the heading of Marketing Matters. There, we will be exploring blogging in the manufacturing industry and steps you can take to reach a bigger audience.  We’ll be explaining the difference between static websites and blogs.  We want to show manufactures how to build a following and create a community, and tips to get your message out through the use of Social Networks. We think connecting with our online audience is a Sign Of Things To Come!

What tools do you use to create a online pressence?

Sculptural Sign For The Silver Spoon

If you read last month’s post I’m A (Not So) Little Teapot you saw the #reallyBIGteapot in it’s beginning stages.   Over the last month we had several visitors come and take a look at the replica Brown Betty Teapot  being built.  Word travelled fast and by the end of the month we we fortunate enough to be featured on the WaterlooMIN site.  Today the Teapot scuplture found it’s home across from Kitchener’s City Hall at The Silver Spoon . This 3 dimensional sign is quite an attention grabber already.  By choosing to have a projected feature on their building they are noticeable from all parts of the corner intersection.  Being across from City Of Kitchener’s City Hall building, The Silver Spoon wanted to capture the attention of those passing by in this high traffic area and a scupltural sign was the key to making it all work.

Custom Business – Appearances Are Everything

Because of the revitalization project in Kitchener’s Downtown The Silver Spoon was able to take advantage of the Facade Upgrade Grant.  This grant is to help business owners in the downtown area to refresh their entranceways, and in turn make downtown Kitchener a more inviting place to visit. To learn more about applying for such a grant make sure to read our post on Business Sign Permits, Sign Regulations And Variances.  This will give you a good idea of what you will need to have prepared when it comes to sign regulations. Always make sure to consult with a professional sign company that understands sign permit regulations.  They are the ones that are most familiar with what is required for sign permit approval.  Once The Silver Spoon had the proper approval they went full force in upgrading their establishment’s entrance-way.  They chose stand out colours and dimensional sign letters for the front of the building, but it’s  The Silver Spoon’s Teapot that is sure to become a landmark for Downtown Kitchener.

3 Dimensional Signs That Are Designed to Impress

How A 3 Dimensional Sign Became A Brand Symbol

We love working with designers!  We take their works of art and make them into something that their clients can hold, display and admire.  Last month we changed the process a bit.  We had the opportunity to take a design firm’s logo and create a 3 dimesional reception sign for them.  The Cutegecko Graphic Design Agency had just acquired a space in The Tannery (a spot we have become very well acquainted with this year) and wanted something to display in the reception area that represented their graphic design business and serve as a warm welcome to those entering their renovated office space inside this historic building.

Getting Down To Business

After discussions about size, materials and colour the process sign manufacturing process began.  Below are the  pictures of their custom wood sign displayed in their new office.  To see the step by step photos of the sign’s contruction, make sure to tak a look at The Curly Blue Blog and read The Cutegecko Design Agency’s assesment of our custom sign work.

As you can see we were able to use a variety of professional sign making techniques in this artistic 3 dimensional sign.  With a mix of cnc routed wood and acrylic letters, the Cutegecko reception sign took shape and became a focal point for their new Kitchener Ontario design agency office.

Upon completion the designers at Cutegecko were just as thrilled at the results as we were.

 Logo Recognition

This reception sign has since been featured in a commercial, and in several online social networks.  It has become a symbol for their brand, and a recognized logo in the area.

Want to see what The Sign Depot Inc. can do with your designs?  Then come to our Designers’ Demo Day Jan 26th from 3-6pm RSVP on Facebook or by emailing accounting@sign-depot.on.ca and see how you can add a revenue stream by offering custom signs to your clients.

Custom 3 Dimensional Signs – Sole Waterloo

How We Brought The Sunshine Back To Waterloo

These are the beginnings on the cold, dark and dreary days of winter.  We decided to add a little sunshine to your life with this post about the 3 dimensional sign required by our client Sole Restaurant. Sole needed to stand out in a very high traffic area so the professional sign makers here at The Sign Depot decided a scuplted 3 dimensional sign would work best in this situation.

Bringing The Design To The Light Of Day

This sculptural sign was designed to be eye-catching and serve as a wayfinding sign with a directional arrow leading the way to Sole Restaurant And Wine Bar. To make sure that golden sun on the establishment’s sign glistened 23K gold leaf guilding was added to this artistic sign and it brought this transformation out of the dark and into the light of day!

The Light At The End Of The Road

After the Sole sign was fully assembled the next step was the installation of custom 3 dimensional sign.  Getting the proper permits to install a sign is often quite a task but consulting with a professional sign maker familiar with the city’s sign regulations made this install smooth sailing. Soon the City Of Waterloo was all a buzz over the newly installed Sole Restaurant Sign.

Waterloo became a much sunnier place to be.  So much so that the sun was shining all morning.

Refreshing A Recognized Establishment

From an impressive 5 foot tall sign inside our shop in Kitchener Ontario, to increasing its height sitting up the bartending station, the 3 dimensional sign will be a stand out wood sign at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. There was quite a mix of sign materials that went into manufacturing the latest “watering hole” structure inside the ACC.  CNC routered wood, coloured acrylic and professional sign grade hardware went into constructing this custom lit sign.  We hope that this sculptural sign quenches your thirst for refreshment, as this was just part of the refresh for the well known Lord Stanley’s Mug inside the arena. Visit the Molson Canadian Brewhouse on the 100 Level Concourse inside the Air Canada Centre and raise a pint for us!

If you’re a fan of the Good Old Hockey Game and a fan of Twitter make sure to tweet us with your favorite NHL team! Hockey is always a hot topic here at The Sign Depot and we want to know which National Hockey League team gets you cheering!

After all its the best game you can name

Designing 3 Dimensional Signs

Many local residents made the trip to Sign Depot workshop this summer to see the MASSIVE Pirate Display that we have been talking about quite a bit. It evolved from small foam sculpture and scaled to proportion of large pirate ship and crafted  from High Density Urethane. To see more about how this artistic sign structure was created make sure to read our post about Creating A Pirate Crew.  What seems like a sign of epic proportions here in The Sign Depot workspace, ends up looking quite different as this 3 dimensional sign is raised to new heights.

3 Dimensional Signs - Pirate - The Sign Depot

Sign Proportion And Height Perception

Although this 3 dimensional sign structure became quite a showpiece in our sign shop here in Kitchener Ontario, the Pirates were created for a different locale altogether. Yesterday crew made the trek to Niagara Falls Ontario where the pirate display became a focal point for those visting Clifton Hill. As you can see the height of this showpiece sign distorts your perception of how large this artistic sign structure truly is.
