The Sign Depot Makes It A Movember To Remember

If you stop by The Sign Depot this month you’ll see that things have gotten a little HAIRY!

Yes we’re busy working away as always, but the Hairy I’m referring to is the facial hair kind. You know the fuzzy stuff on the upper lip.

What Does Movember Have To Do With Custom Wood Signs?

Peter Moir the Owner/President of Sign Depot has signed on to participate in Movember Canada this year.  Being that the main logo for The Sign Depot Inc. features a Moustached fellow it makes for a perfect fit! What else do moustaches and signs have in common?  A custom carved sign makes an impression the way a well groomed  Movember moustache does.  They both get people talking and raise awaremess.  Whether it is for a business or for an non-for profit, getting noticed is an important part of making a great impression.

More About Movember

For those who have not heard about Movember, it is a charitible organization formed to raise awareness about Men’s Health issues.  Being part of a community of those willing to help others is something we here at The Sign Depot can get on board with!  Being supportive to those is need is a great way to connect with the community  you are based in.  Find ways to get involved and you will know what it feels like to be part of something bigger.  All it takes is a little initiative and some creative thinking.

Rick Mercer is known for his rants, but see what he has to say about Prostate Health and his involvement with the Movember community.

How The Sign Depot Artistic Sign Makers Get Inspired At An Art Gallery

Paradigms of Perception

It’s amazing what you can find in your own back yard just by looking a little bit harder.

Here at The Sign Depot we believe in investing in our Company Culture and work hard to have a harmonious environment for our artistic staff.  We always look for ways to inspire their craft while supporting the community we are situated in.  We find that the mix of inspiration and giving back sparks creativity. Friday we took a look at the newest art gallery exhibit at Jennifer Gough‘s Mindseye Studio in Kitchener. PARADIGMS OF PERCEPTION It definately made us look deeper. It may be difficult to see here but many of the pieces were created through the use of texture, light & shadows & even QR codes! Only in Kitchener Waterloo can art & tech blend together seamlessly. Did I mention that Jennifer is also raising funds for the CNIB with this show?  We were supporting Arts and Culture, Company Culture and Community Charity all in this one trip to a gallery. That’s why we are so glad she invited us to come on board as sponsors.  Creating & collaborating are things we know very well.  We provided the sign banner shown above and created vinyl graphics to post the artists’ names by their artistic pieces in the show, and made sure to make a donation to the CNIB as well.  Make sure to support your local arts community and visit a local art gallery. Keep culture alive where you live.  Find ways to be creative and use your talents to help others in your community, especially when it comes to charitable efforts.  We had a great time and it made for great conversations back at The Sign Depot workspace.  It was great to experience the art studio show with my co-workers and see everyone’s take on the pieces displayed. If nothing else, I hope you know Seeing Is Believing

How The Sign Depot Prepares For The Pending Postal Strike In Our Community

Mailbox - Postal Strike - Canada Post - The Sign Depot

Will The Canada Post Strike Affect The Sign Depot?

… Hopefully it won’t .

We’ve spent the better part of the last few weeks watching the headlines regarding the Canada Postal Workers Strike.  From the news earlier this week it seems almost unavoidable.  Being that many of our clients pay by company cheques, we needed to take precautions to make sure this strike didn’t cause cash flow problems.  These are the steps we’ve taken and in sharing them, we hope your are able to avoid some hurdles as well.

Where To Start

  • Take a look at your accounts receivable.  See what is left outstanding.  Contact those clients and see if their payments have been sent.  If they said it’s been sent, ask for the cheque number.  This will give you an idea of what cheques you will have to track down in case of mail that is held back or lost during this ordeal.
  • Check your accounts payable.  If you regularly pay by cheque you might find your payments will become overdue if you mail them out.  Look for alternate methods of payment (see below)
  • How will your products end up in the hands of your clients?  If Canada Post is your main method of shipping you may want to look into setting up an account with a courier service.

Start Your Action Plan

  • For your accounts receivable, how many of your clients are local?  Can you make payment pickup arrangements?  Every invoice I sent out this week had this message attached to it
In order to avoid complications with the looming postal strike, we would appreciate it if we were informed when the payment is prepared for the attached invoice. We’d rather send someone to retrieve it. Thanks very much
  • For your out of town customers, see if they are able to pay by credit card or through an online banking transfer.  If those methods are not available to them then suggest they make courier arrangements.
  • Accounts payable should also make arrangements as well.  Many companies will accept credit and online payments, and depending on their methods for payment acceptance you may be able to take the bill to your bank and pay it by cheque through the teller.
  • Inform your clients that frieght charges may change during this time period if you are changing your shipping methods.
Today the National Post asked if anyone would notice if there’s a strike.  We think so, and we’re taking some simple steps to avoid mail disruptions during the postal strike.  Find a way that works best in your community to avoid business interuptions and make sure your clients and customers know that they are still your top priority during a postal strike.

Involved In Creating Community In This Creative Community

Involved In Our Community

Sign Depot has always been part of the local community, by providing donations to silent auctions, golf tournaments etc.    This has always been well received, but never quite matched how creative we can be.  Over the last year we chose some different community involvement projects which we hope provided a positive impact on the people living in this area. It’s amazing the impact one sign, or in this case one sign company can have.

It started last May with the Grand Opening of our new location.  We partnered with The Food Bank of Waterloo Region‘s newest endevour THE DIG IN CAMPAIGN.  We brought the community out to enjoy our new surroundings along with a BBQ lunch in return for their Food Bank Donations.

Some of our other new community involvement projects include

We do our best to support the community and encourage them to be creative as well.  Finding ways to be involved in our arts community, small business networks, chartiable organizations and not for profits are just some of the ways we give back. Always thinking of creative ways to be involved is something we hope many companies will implement. We are excited about some upcoming projects The Sign Depot will be supporting in the upcoming months, but we are just as excited to be a fun place to come and visit!  Just ask Darin White the winner of the Sign Depot WORD JUMBLE.
